The link between sleep and mental health

Why poor sleep and low mood tend to arrive together, and which one to treat first.

A two-way relationship

Anxiety and low mood disturb sleep — that much is familiar. Less widely known is that disrupted sleep independently worsens emotional regulation, concentration, and resilience the following day, which then feeds the original difficulty.

What tends to help

  • A consistent wake time, including at weekends
  • Getting out of bed if you have been awake more than twenty minutes
  • Keeping the bed associated with sleep rather than with work or scrolling
  • Treating daytime light exposure as part of the night's preparation

When to seek help

If difficulty sleeping has persisted beyond a few weeks, or you are using alcohol or sedatives to get to sleep, it is worth raising with a professional. Insomnia responds well to structured treatment, often more quickly than people expect.
