Couple counselling: when to go, and what it is not

Clearing up the common assumption that counselling is where relationships go to end.

The waiting problem

Research consistently finds that couples delay seeking help for a long time after problems begin. The difficulty is rarely the issue itself — it is the habits of relating that have formed around it in the meantime.

What counselling is for

  • Interrupting arguments that repeat the same shape every time
  • Rebuilding communication after a breach of trust
  • Navigating a transition: a move, a new child, illness, bereavement
  • Deciding, with support, whether to continue

What it is not

It is not an arbitration where a professional declares who is right. A counsellor's job is to make the pattern visible to both of you, not to award a verdict.

Going alone

If your partner will not attend, individual work is still worthwhile. Changing your own half of a dynamic changes the dynamic.
